Charging cables suck, period. They cost more than they’re worth, the cables get tangled up, and no matter how careful you are with them, they always end up frayed or have busted ports. If they aren’t broken completely, you have to carefully position your phone to get a charge. Fun stuff, huh?
But now, there are wireless chargers. RAVPower is leading the charge, no pun intended, towards a new way of keeping your battery up that don’t involve any cables. Best of all, it works. So before we get to the product itself, let’s talk about wireless charging.
What is Wireless Charging?
So how does wireless charging work? It sounds impossible at first, until you figure out how it works. Wireless chargers use an interface known as Qi, which is created by the Wireless Power Consortium. This interface is used by all wireless chargers, so it’s not some marketing ploy.
To charge wireless, you need to have a Qi charger, and your device should be Qi-enabled. Qi is found on some of the newer devices, but if your device has no Qi, have no fear. You can buy an add-on for about ten bucks to have your device Qi-enabled.
Qi uses magnetism to charge wirelessly. Two planar wire coils are paired, and they receive signals from each other through magnetism. When your battery is close to the device, magnetism allows your device to charge.
To charge your phone or other device on a wireless charger, all you have to do is lay it down on the device’s magnetic mat, and the device absorbs magnetic energy. The coil converts this into electrical energy, and the battery recharges. The coil’s output is adjusted so that it’s the same as the output from a normal charger. Therefore, wireless chargers are universal and you don’t have to worry about too much energy going into your device.
For those who want to know more about the science of wireless charging, just look up Qi and see what it does. Now, let’s look at how you set up Qi.
How to Set Up Qi for Your Device
As we said before, some newer devices do have Qi already in the hardware, so you don’t have to worry about setting anything up. In order to find out if your device is suitable for Qi, look up your device’s specs and see if it’s Qi Integrated or if it mentions anything about built-in wireless charging. A few examples of devices with built-in charging include Nexus 4, 5, and 6. Just do some research to see if your device supports it.
But sadly, a majority of devices to not have Qi built-in. Therefore, you need to make your device Qi-ready, which means you’ll be putting on a charging coil to your device. This means your device will have a new set of battery points that allow Qi to be absorbed into the battery.
Sounds complicated? It’s not. Installing Qi on your phone is actually quite easy! You need to buy a module that’s tailored for your own device, since you’ll be placing the points on the battery with a certain part of your phone. Look for your device’s correct model number and find the Qi charger that works for you.
Once you get the module, it’s easy to install it. All you have to do is fit it into the back of the phone, right on the indentations, and it even comes with adhesive to help you out. When you put your phone back together, the module should never fall out. And it’s barely noticeable as well. Usually, you have to look for the bulge in order to feel the difference.
So let’s examine the wireless charger itself. Today, we’ll be looking at the RAVPower Qi Travel Charger.
The Travel Charger costs about $30, just a bit more than those wired chargers you have to buy constantly. It fits in your pocket as well, about the same size as your phone. However, the phone is able to fit into the charger with ease, so you won’t have to worry. Your phone will rest without any trouble as you lay it on the charger. If your device is bigger, you can buy the RavPower Qi Charging pad, which costs a bit more, but is a lot larger.
All you have to do is plug the charger into the wall or to USB and set the device on the charger. Once that happens, the charger will start and begin juicing up your battery.
Wireless Chargers and Cases
One concern many have with wireless charger is when your device has a case. Many people put a case on their phone or tablet to give it extra protection. For some wireless chargers, the thick case prevents the phone from charging, and it’s always annoying to have to take the device out of the case, charge it, and then put it back in.
However, the RavPower is quite powerful, and the phone was able to charge even through an Otterbox, one of the toughest cases around. Now then, this will depend on the case, phone, and wireless charger you’re using. But as long as you’re using a powerful wireless charger, you should have no problems whatsoever.
Pros, Cons, and Our Opinion About The RavPower
So is the RavPower worth it? Is wireless charging really the wave of the future? Let’s find out.
• Installing Qi on older devices is easy and inexpensive.
• No long, tangled charging cord. No having to worry about busted ports and cheap, fraying cords.
• The unit charges through your wall or computer, making it quite versatile, and charges your phone at the same amount no matter what the power source is.
• User-friendly. After you set everything up, just lay the device on the charger’s base, and you can use any Qi-enabled phone or device on your charger, so you won’t have to worry about pairing.
• Charger is portable and fits most phones with ease.
• A bit more expensive than normal chargers, but you may end up saving more in the long run.
• Wireless devices are sensitive to heat, and if the charger gets too hot, it may decrease your battery’s lifespan, so beware. This isn’t a defect, but a side-effect.
• The charger has the same problem with traditional chargers in that you should charge your phone when it’s about halfway drained. If you recharge and discharge your phone frequently, as well as let it die and recharge, it may lower the overall battery life.
Its flaws are minor. It’s only a bit expensive than your traditional charger, and a replacement battery doesn’t cost too much. The RavPower wireless charger has everything a person would want when it comes to charging your phone wirelessly. It’s cheap, easy to use, and fits most devices. Once you use the RavPower, you’ll never have to worry about cords and having to buy replacement ones. Wireless charging is still in its infancy, but devices such as this is showing great potential, and we’re eager to see what the future will bring.
